In the 21st century, the concept of "Environment" became closely associated, if not synonymous, to "Life". The present volume of environmental studies has been undertaken in a specialized and oftentimes isolated manner. This is somewhat contradictory to notion of the environment itself due to the interdependence of environmental system components. Therefore, to properly address environmental problems, the key is to go beyond the limitations of the individualized approaches and instead strive to implement a convergence of knowledge . "Information" plays an important role in solving environmental problems. And through an integrated approach involving various research activities, such as "detection and monitoring", "modeling", "simulation", and "planning", we can constantly strive for the goal of complete comprehension, monitoring, prediction, and control of environmental systems. We aim to effectively utilize and integrate these "informatics" to make important scientific contributions to the study of the environment and its conservation.
At Nadaoka Laboratory, we are interested in the study of environmental systems for coastal areas specific to the following themes:
- &color(#000080){Coral reefs-seagrass beds-sand area-mangrove ecosystems};
- &color(#000080){"Land-coastal area-ocean-atmosphere" integrated wide-area environmental systems};
- &color(#000080){Development of numerical simulations for waves, currents, and sediment transport};
- &color(#000080){Development and application of monitoring techniques using remote sensing};
The objectives of the laboratory are to:
+&color(#B22222){Quantify, describe, and make predictions for coastal environmental systems by studying them &br; in as multi-faceted and comprehensive an approach as possible.};
+&color(#B22222){Assess the effects of human activities on the environment, and seek ways for human &br; populations to harmoniously coexist with the environment. Our techniques include field surveys, monitoring using remote sensing, and the development of new methods related to such &br; techniques.};
+&color(#B22222){Develop numerical modeling systems to describe and predict physical and ecological processes.};
+&color(#B22222){Initiate collaborations with the other institutes and research groups, including those in foreign &br; countries, for possible cross-disciplinary exchanges of knowledge.};
