We visited Majuro and Pohnpei to collect crown-of-thorns starfish samples
Members: Prof.Nadaoka, Ms. Yasuda
We collect crown-of-thorns starfish samples at Majuro and Pohnpei to reveal genetic structure of this species world wide. Besides, we gave talks about broad range of our recent studies on environmental issues including outbreaks of crown-of-thorns starfish and discussed with local people.

Nov/16 - Nov/17
Ms Yasuda attended 15th annual meeting of Japanese DNA Polymorphism society. In this conference she won a prize for oral presentation entitled "Microsatellite marker analysis to reveal population genetic structure of the crown-of-thorns starfish Acanthaster planci (L.) in Japan and Pacific Islands".
Contents:We examined microsatellite loci of crown-of-thorns starfish collected from throughout Japan, Philippines, Palau and Fiji. Although there was an isolation by distance pattern among all locations, there was no clear genetic structure among Japanese and Philippines populations, suggesting that these populations are connected by Kuroshio and its associated currents.

Aug 18 - Sep 1
We conducted various field survey activities in Ishigaki Island (Okinawa, Japan) aimed at exploring the connectivity of Shiraho Reef and the adjacent land (i.e. Todoroki watershed and other nearby coastal land).

We conducted field observations of water quality and hydrodynamics in Puerto Galera, Mindoro island in the Philippines.
members: M.Rubio, A.Blanco, H.Iizuka, T.Nishimoto, N.Takemoto, E.Paringit(University of the Philippines)
The purpose
Recently, the water quality deterioration and its impact on the ecosystem are worsening because of the uncontrolled tourism infrastructure development. We propose monitoring of the Puerto Galera Bay and its surrounding coastal area in order to quantitatively describe the actual condition and the cause of water deterioration for proper management.
The features
1. This project is conducted in cooperation with the local government, local NGO and the University of the Philippines with the intention to eventually share the results of this project with the local people.
2. This project is an integrated, comprehensive investigation research that will consider social, economic, and cultural factors, not only physical, chemical and biological environment.

Aug 10
This journal paper was accepted in Molecular Ecology Notes.
"Yasuda, N., S.Nagai, M.Hamaguchi, C.L.Lian and K.Nadaoka: Development of microsatellite markers for the crown-of-thorns starfish Acanthaster planci, Molecular Ecology Notes, Vol.6, No.1, pp.141-143, 2006."
Abstract: http://www.blackwell-synergy.com/doi/abs/10.1111/j.1471-8286.2005.01168.x
Description: The high polymorphic microsatellite markers that will reveal the genetic population of COTS are isolated. The genetic population structure of COTS will give us some important information to predict the unknown dispersal of pelagic larvae.

Jun 9 - Jul 20
We conducted a field survey to collect COTS larvae in the Yabiji shoal that lies north of Miyako Island. We also investigated the physical environment in and around artificial nursery reef for Trochus (where cultivation of small shellfish exists).

To understand the physical environment around Miyako Island.
To examine the physical factors that effectively affects the settlement and growth of coral larvae in artificial nursery reef for Trochus
