Ms. Nina Yasuda, a graduate student, attended 82nd Annual Meeting of Australian Coral Reef Society held in Mission Beach, Australia from August 18 to 20 for presenting two papers. She won a student prize for her oral presentation entitled "Genetic structure of the crown-of-thorns starfish, Acanthaster planci, throughout the Ryukyu Islands and southern part of the Mainlands of Japan".

We developed microsatellite markers and analyzed 10 populations from Japan and one population from Fiji. As a result, we found no isolation-by-distance pattern among Japanese populations implying that gene flow is greater than gene drift. Besides numerical simulation suggested that there may be appreciable larval dispersal by unsteady ocean and coastal currents.
