Survey
results presented at JSPS Manila Sympo
Results of the field observation
of the Manila Bay Laguna Lake were presented during the Symposium on Environmental Issues Related to Infrastructure Development
held in Manila last August 8-9, 2003. Prof Nadaoka presented the results on "Field
Survey on Hydrodynamics and Water Quality in Manila Bay and Laguna Lake" while Dr. Paringit discussed about the "Monitoring
and Assessment of Laguna de Bay Waters from Space Observations and Optical Modeling". In a related effort, Dr Taro Urase made a
"Comparative Study on Contaminants in Leachate from Solid Waste Disposal Sites and in Road Deposits in Japan and in the
Philippines" which was partially supported by the IMSWES Project.
Prof Nadaoka also met with
officers of the Laguna Lake Development Authority on August 11. They refined the details of establishing semi-permanent observation
platform for instruments to be provided by Dr Nadaoka. The instruments are planned to be deployed for a period of 2 years or more with
periodic maintenance and data download.
TIT proposes
another field survey for Manila Bay
Although field data have been gathered for Laguna Lake
both in rainy and dry seasons (Oct 2000 and Feb 2001, respectively), data for Manila Bay was obtained only during rainy season (Oct 2000).
There is a need to conduct a field survey at Manila Bay for dry season. Another joint field survey with NIGS, NHRC and MSI is being
planned for Manila Bay in late February. The proposed schedule is as follows:
-
Feb 24 (Mon) Arrival to Manila, and visit to LLDA with Dr. Tabios and others
-
Feb 25 (Tue) Preparation
-
Feb 26 (Wed) Deployment of moored buoys with sensors
-
Feb 27 (Thu) Measurements by boats
-
Feb 28 (Fri) Measurements by boats and sensor retrieval
-
Mar 1 (Sat) Cleaning and Packing
-
Mar 2 (Sun) Return to Japan
Mr. Tamura and Mr. Paringit of Nadaoka Laboratory may arrive at Manila one or two days earlier for the
preparation while Dr. Urase and his student, Mr. Suzuki, will probably join this field campaign.
February 2002 Field
Survey
Another field campaign was conducted by IMSWES from
February 23 to 28. This time, fieldwork was limited to Laguna Lake area only. The main purpose of the campaign was to establish the
influence of saltwater intrusion to the lake from Manila Bay via Pasig River. The group gained
additional support from the UPD Department of Environmental Engineering whose researchers, staff members and graduate students
participated in the field work.
In late January, Mr. Hitoshi Tamura went to Manila to
assist counterparts from NIGS in the deployment of TIT sensors in Manila Bay for long-term observation. Mr. Tamura again was in Manila from March 23-27 to assist in
another field observation.
The next round of intensive field work is slated
June, 2002 to assimilate the dry-to-wet climate transition conditions.
October 2001 Field
Survey
Field observation surveys were conducted on Laguna
Lake and Manila Bay covering the period from October 5 to 13, 2001. Various sensors, including velocity, temperature, salinity,
chlorophyll-a and turbidity meters, were deployed throughout Manila Bay, Laguna Lake and the connecting Pasig River to to calibrate
numerical models under development to simulate currents and related transport of turbid materials, thermal, DO, nutrients, heavy metals
and other chemical substances and the behavior of the biological quantities like phyto- and zooplanktons. Activities also included water sampling from the bodies of water mentioned.
Dr. Fernando Siringan (NIGS), who
at that time was
a JSPS visiting researcher at TIT, coordinated the field survey on Philippine side. Dr. Guillermo Tabios (COE-NHRC) and Dr. Cesar Villanoy
(UP MSI) lent their knowledge experience in conducting field the field survey on Laguna Lake and in Manila Bay respectively. Graduate
students and research assistants from UP MSI and NIGS also participated in the field work.
From TIT, Prof. Kazuo Nadaoka spearheaded the survey
group with Prof. Taro Urase who specializes in water quality and coastal oceanography specialist Dr Hiroshi Yagi.
Prof Nadaoka of TIT, also expressed plans for long
term deployment and another field campaign during the dry season, probably late February next year .

IMSWES Holds First Workshop
November 23-24, 2000
Hotel Rembrandt, Quezon City, Philippines
Objectives
of the Workshop
The main goal of this workshop is to learn, to become aware, share, to update and to be able
to assess or reassess the various issues, problems, knowledge, studies, and ongoing programs of the state of the bay/lake system. The
specific objectives include the following:
-
to review the present status of the environmental and technical issues and
concerns of Manila Bay and Laguna Lake and their surrounding watershed areas taking into consideration the economic, political and
social dimensions of dealing with these systems
-
to identify possible integrated approaches to analyze and address the various
environmental and technical issues
-
to identify and prioritize possible research agenda and methodologies for the
group
-
to discuss specific arrangements of research collaborations between the Philippine
and Japanese researchers
-
to discuss a proposal for large-scale data collection of water and environmental
data in the bay/lake system
Please see Workshop Schedule
for final program.
